Overview
ISO 50001 is the internationally recognised standard for an Energy Management System (EnMS), published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The current version is ISO 50001:2018. It gives organisations a structured framework to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve the way they manage energy, so they can reduce energy consumption, lower costs and cut greenhouse-gas emissions.
The standard is built on the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle. An organisation reviews its energy use, sets a baseline and energy performance indicators (EnPIs), defines an energy policy with objectives and targets, implements action plans, and then monitors and reviews results to drive continual improvement.
ISO 50001 is suitable for any organisation regardless of size, sector or location – manufacturing plants, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions, commercial buildings, utilities and public-sector bodies. In India it is especially relevant to energy-intensive industries and supports compliance with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) framework and the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
Certification is issued by independent certification bodies, typically accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) under the Quality Council of India (QCI).
