Overview

Brand Approval on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is the process through which a seller obtains authorisation to list and sell products under a specific brand name on the portal. In many product categories, GeM requires the brand to be approved before the seller can upload its catalogue, so that buyers know the brand is genuine and the seller is entitled to offer it.

It is needed by sellers and OEMs on GeM, manufacturers, traders, resellers and authorised dealers, who want to sell branded goods to government buyers. A seller may apply either as the owner of a registered trademark, as the owner of an unregistered brand, or as an authorised seller of someone else's brand using an authorisation letter.

Brand approval is required because GeM allows catalogue listing only against an approved brand. It protects intellectual-property rights, prevents misuse of brand names, and assures government buyers that the products offered are authentic and supplied by entitled sellers.

What is Brand Approval

Brand Approval is a GeM catalogue process in which a seller seeks the platform's permission to offer products under a particular brand. Once the brand is approved for the seller in a given category, the seller can create product listings and upload its catalogue under that brand.

Sellers can apply for brand approval in different ways depending on their rights over the brand:
  • Registered Brand – where the seller owns a registered trademark for the brand in the relevant class/category of goods.
  • Unregistered Brand – where the seller owns the brand but does not yet hold a registered trademark, supported by a duly signed and notarised undertaking in the prescribed format.
  • OEM / Authorised Seller – where the seller is not the brand owner and uses a Brand Authorisation Letter or OEM authorisation to sell the brand.
  • Unbranded – for generic products that are offered without any brand name.
The request is submitted from the seller dashboard under the catalogue / brand section. As per current GeM norms, the brand approval request is processed within a few working days from submission, and the approval team may ask for additional information or documents during review. Exact categories, options and timelines should be confirmed on the official GeM portal as they may change.

FAQs

Do I need a registered trademark to get brand approval on GeM?+
No. A registered trademark is one route, but it is not the only one. If you own the brand without a registered trademark, you can apply as an unregistered brand using a duly signed, stamped and notarised undertaking in the prescribed format. If you are selling another company's brand, you can apply with a valid Brand Authorisation or OEM authorisation letter. The exact options and supporting documents are as per the current rules on the official GeM portal.
